Griffin edwards

Instruments Taught

Percussion

About

Griffin began playing the drums at ten years old, inspired by the Beatles Rock Band Wii game. In middle and high school, he participated in his school’s orchestral and jazz bands, and in eighth grade joined the School of Rock music program. In 2018 and 2019, he participated in the School of Rock Allstar program where he gained a deep appreciation for touring and performing live music. In 2019, Griffin chose to attend Oberlin College, pursuing a five year double major in jazz percussion and psychology. There, Griffin had the opportunity to take lessons with Billy Hart and Ari Honeig. He also participated in the Oberlin Jazz Ensemble, as well as a variety of other musical settings from hard rock to musical theatre! At Oberlin, and since graduating, Griffin has played and recorded with artists Unto, Sarah Krohn, and The Surrealists. He is excited about playing more shows in Philadelphia and New York, and releasing music soon!  Aside from playing drums, Griffin also enjoys playing bass, composing, and yo-yoing.

Teaching Philosophy

Griffin believes a curious and open attitude towards music and one’s instrument is essential for both unlocking creativity and your unique voice as a musician! He thinks no student is too inexperienced to express their individuality as a musician! In teaching, Griffin believes listening, learning, and playing along to songs is a key part of any musician’s development, regardless of their level of skill. Additionally, he holds that no aspect of practicing needs to be tedious if the student understands how to apply the material to a musical context! Griffin believes the skills acquired in learning an instrument are universal and can be applied to all aspects of life. The ability to attempt new skills and consistently work towards small goals are invaluable tools that can make musicians more capable human beings overall!
