About
Mark Edwards received his Bachelor of Science in Music Education degree from West Chester University where he concentrated in both instrumental and vocal fields of study. He has had an exceptional twenty-one year career as an Institutional Music Instructor at the Pennsylvania State Correctional Institution at Graterford where he has provided comprehensive programming and activities for the residents who wish to improve themselves through the musical experience. Since retiring from the state system in 2005, he is enjoying a career as a freelance musician, conductor, composer and disc jockey, plus teaching part- time. He has conducted and performed with church and community groups, commercial bands, pit orchestras, and many varied projects playing drums & percussion, jazz keyboard, tuba, voice and guitar.
Teaching Philosophy
Mark’s instructional emphasis focuses on total musicianship and the enjoyment derived from the act of musical creation. In addition to good technique and playing correct notes, a great performance emphasizes melodic phrasing, dynamics, interpretation, and an intrinsic sense of rhythm, also known as the “groove”.
