About

Sara Powell is a passionate concert saxophonist and dedicated private music teacher based in West Chester, Pennsylvania. With a strong foundation in both performance and education, she specializes in saxophone performance and teaching woodwinds. Sara has been playing saxophone since 2009, spending nearly 11 years specializing in tenor saxophone. More recently, she has been developing her soprano and alto saxophone skills, striving to achieve a well-rounded mastery of all saxophones. Additionally, she has experience doubling on clarinet and flute, further enhancing her versatility as a musician.

Sara Powell holds both a Bachelor’s and a Master of Music degree in Saxophone Performance from West Chester University of Pennsylvania. During her master’s studies, she served as the Graduate Assistant of Jazz Studies, and graduated with honors in May 2025. Sara spent the majority of her time at the Wells School of Music studying with saxophonist, Jonathan Ragonese and a short amount of time studying with Dr. Derek Granger. Throughout her time at the Wells School of Music, Sara has contributed to four CD recordings with the West Chester University Wind Ensemble. By May 2025, she will have performed overseas twice, adding international experience to her musical career.

Looking ahead, Sara plans to continue refining her craft and sharing her expertise through teaching. In the coming years, she intends to pursue a Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) in Saxophone to further her contributions to music education and performance. Beyond her musicianship, Sara is a strong advocate for women and non-binary individuals in music.

Teaching Philosophy

She is committed to creating a safe, inclusive, and empowering environment where musicians of all abilities can express themselves freely and authentically.
